Small paintings can make a big impact!

 

I’m enthralled with large paintings but there is something to be said for smaller works of art.  I recall walking into a museum show where  Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl with the Pearl” was on loan from the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis. I was really excited to see this iconic piece in person and was a little taken back on the dimensions of the painting. This little oil painting was breadth taking and that experience shifted my perspective on small paintings and their impact on the viewer. It was then that I started embracing the creation of small paintings.

Eric Aho

Eric Aho was born in Melrose, Massachusetts in 1966, and in 1974, moved with his family to Hudson, New Hampshire. After studying at the Central School of Art and Design in London, Aho received his BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. In 1989, he participated in the first exchange of scholars between the U.S. and Cuba in over thirty years. Aho completed his graduate work at the Lahti Art Institute in Finland supported by a Fulbright Fellowship in 1991/92 and an American-Scandinavian Foundation grant in 1993. His paintings have been exhibited and collected widely in the United States and abroad. Since his earliest projects, Aho has joined historical research, personal inquiry, and a close reading of the landscape together with reverie and delight in experiencing the natural world reinvigorating what it means to paint the landscape today. He lives and works in Saxtons River, Vermont.

Robert Reynolds

Robert Reynolds lives and works in Stony Creek, Connecticut. He is primarily self-taught and has been drawing and painting all his life. Robert has never lost the simple love for making marks on paper and carries a drawing book with him everywhere he goes. He has painted and worked all over the world, absorbing the cultures and sights he immerses himself in. His work has exhibited nationally, and is in collections internationally. Robert is also owner and namesake of Reynolds Fine Art, a contemporary art gallery located in downtown New Haven, CT. Website: http://reynoldsfineart.com/gallery/robert-reynolds/

I will be giving a talk about the color wheel this Sunday at the Ely Center of Contemporary Art.

Join A.I.R. painter, Shilo Ratner for a talk about color theory followed by a hands-on workshop. Shilo will introduce participants to the color wheel and discuss color interaction and lead everyone through an exciting collage project. No fee to participate. Materials provided.
